AMD expects $ 800 million due to US AI license requirements

AMD says that the requirements of monitoring the US government license to export artificial intelligence chips to China and some other countries may have a material impact on their profits.
If AMD does not successfully obtain a license, the company may be in contact for approximately $ 800 million in inventory, purchasing obligations, and relevant reserve fees, according to a file with the Securities and Stock Exchange Committee on Wednesday. According to AMD, the new export rules apply to the company’s MI308 graphics units.
“On April 15, 2025, AMD completed its initial evaluation of new licensing requirements implemented by the (American) government to export some semiconductor products to China (including Hong Kong and Macau) and D: 5 countries,” AMD wrote in the deposit. “Export Control) applies to Mi308 products. The company expects to apply for licenses, but there is no guarantee that licenses will be granted.”

The newly imposed export controls affect a number of chip makers, including the main AMD competition NVIDIA. On Tuesday’s file, NVIDIA said it expects a $ 5.5 billion fees related to export controls in the first quarter ending on April 27.
Many government officials called for stronger export controls on the processing processing units that were built by the United States. They argue that allowing China -based companies to obtain these chips, especially artificial intelligence companies, threaten the dominance of the United States in artificial intelligence as well as national security.
In a statement submitted to Reuters yesterday, a spokesman for the US Department of Commerce said that the condition of licensing in the service of “directing the president to protect our national and economic security.”
